The need for housing auxiliary services for the campus in one location became apparent after World War II. The planning for the Memorial Union began in the summer of 1947. The Alumni Association started the fund drive and the Alumni Foundation was formed to handle the finances. The alumni, reaching out to former students and the community, conducted a successful drive. A native of Bessemer, Michigan, Margaret Holley Chapman grew up in Lake Linden and graduated from Calumet High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lawrence College in 1932 and went on to attend Michigan College of Mining and Technology, becoming the first female to receive a degree from the college.
